In 1957, Professor John Douglas Story, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland, proposed the creation of a regional university college to meet the needs of the people of North Queensland. At that time, the only providers of higher education were located in the state capital, Brisbane. On February 27, 1961, The University College of Townsville was opened. Consequently, and since he had not disputed this point either at first instance or on appeal, it was found that Professor Ridd had infringed the company agreement. Violation of a company agreement violates section 50 of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and results in a civil penalty. However, the court of appeal`s orders allowed Professor Ridd to file and serve another notice of appeal, so no civil penalty was imposed in the circumstances. In 2015, the university promoted an employee from research officer to academic advisor after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a student. The Acting Vice-Chancellor stated that “there had been a failure of our internal processes”[44] and that “if management had known that (the employee) had pleaded guilty, he would have been fired immediately.” News Limited published findings that contradict the university`s claims that the management, including the vice chancellor and the university secretary, were informed of the guilty plea at that time and before the author was promoted. [45] James Cook University in Townsville operates three non-denominational rooms for 621 students.
University Hall was the first residence established at the university in the 1960s and is currently the largest of the student residences with 291 fully equipped rooms. [34] University Hall opened in 1967 as a mixed dormitory and claims to be the first co-educational student residence in Australia. George Roberts Hall opened in 2002 with 250 residents in fully equipped unit-style housing. [35] The 80-bed International Rotary House was founded in 1990 with the support of Rotary clubs. Western Halls and Western Courts, former residence rooms, closed in 2008 and 2018, respectively. Another team of seven scientists led by a water physiologist from Deakin University in Victoria studied the discredited scientist, who was trained at JCU between 2010 and 2014, biologist Oona Lönnstedt, who received her PhD from the Queensland Institution. [52] The investigation was launched after Dr. Lönnstedt was found guilty of fabricating data underlying a study at a Swedish university after he retired from JCU. [53] On January 1, 1982, JCU merged with the Townsville College of Advanced Education adjacent to the main Douglas campus. The university established a presence in Cairns in 1987 and moved to its current location in the suburb of Smithfield in 1995. On January 1, 1991, the School of Art and Design at Townsville College in TAFE was transferred to JCU.
[2] The current name of James Cook University became official on January 1, 1998. [6] In 2003, the university opened an international campus in Singapore. The university continued to expand its presence by establishing another campus in Brisbane, Queensland, in 2006. The motto of the university is Cresente Luce, which means that the light is getting bigger and bigger. This motto was first proposed in 1962 by Professor Frederick Walter Robinson (Doc Robbie), Professor of English at the University of Queensland, for the University College of Townsville. University College was founded as a college of the University of Queensland. Adopted in 1963, the motto remained unchanged after the founding and incorporation of James Cook University of North Queensland in April 1970 and later became James Cook University. These findings and guidance come from Professor Ridd`s various behavioural courses, in which he has criticised his colleagues` scientific acumen and research, a JCU (ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies) research centre, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Such behavior occurred on August 1, 2017, when Professor Ridd appeared on the Sky News TV show “Jones & Co.” He was accused of “destroying” these organizations and his JCU colleagues, saying we “can no longer trust” the research they published. JCU`s Townsville campus is the university`s largest campus, located on 386 acres in the suburb of Douglas, near the military base and the Lee of Mount Stuart. More than 13,000 students study at JCU Townsville, including more than 1,100 international students.
Adjacent to the university are Townsville Hospital and the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE. [7] Originally located in the suburbs of Pimlico, the university moved to its current location in 1967. The Discovery Rise project[8] was announced in September 2007. [9] The $1 billion project aims to redevelop the university`s campus in Townsville. [10] The project was completed in 2015. [11] A second campus, JCU Townsville City, opened in 2015 and is located in Townsville`s Central Business District. The campus offers a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities and services for the university, businesses and community organizations. Nevertheless, this decision highlights the complex interrelationship between the exercise of intellectual freedom, particularly in the academic field, and workplace codes of conduct and company agreements. Academics, it seems, cannot justify their comments or behaviors, however controversial they may be, by simply claiming that the exercise of their intellectual freedom is protected.
